MARY’S APOTHECARY

Mary Larson and her husband Josh own a shop in downtown La Crosse, WI called Full Circle Supply. The idea is that everything on this earth comes full circle. As consumers in a throwaway society of single-use plastics, processed foods, and fast fashion, it’s up to us to make smart purchasing decisions.

One major component of the store is dedicated to refills: Bring in your empty bottles and refill with shampoo, laundry detergent or furniture polish, to name a few. The purpose is not to throw away less, or even to recycle, but to consume less in the first place. By reusing a plastic bottle, not only does the old one not end up in a landfill, but you have removed the need to buy yet another plastic bottle.

The inspiration for the Mary’s Apothecary product line came from experimenting with ingredients to create new products for the shop. After sharing samples with friends and receiving enthusiastic requests for more, Mary upped her game and developed an entire line of products. All products are made locally and with natural ingredients. The packaging embodies the past when plastic wasn’t an option, with a label inspired by vintage apothecary design and an illustration of Mary herself looking badass in a pair of shades and vintage blouse.

Try it for yourself — it’s seriously good stuff. (Photography by Dahli Durley.)
